Chembin thalu curry is a traditional Kerala Recipe for Onam / Vishu Kerala Sayda. It is not a popular dish in Kerala, but it is extremely healthy and delicious.

Here I am adding the traditional Chembin thalu curry, which is made with colocasia tender leaves (taro tender leaves) which are known as Chembin thalu.


  • Chembin Thalu - 3 
  • Small Onion  Sliced - 2 Tablespoon
  • Parippu/ Daal - 1/2 Cups
  • Water - 2 Cups
  • Salt -1 Teaspoon
  • Curry Leaves - 1 Sprig
  • Sambar Powder -3 Tablespoon
  • Coconut Oil - 2 Tablespoon
  • Garlic - 3 Nos
  • Green Chillies - 2 Nos
  • Tamarind, Gooseberry Size- 1 No
  • For Seasoning: 
  • Coconut Oil - 2 Tablespoon
  • Curry Leaves- 1 Spring
  • Dry Red Chilli - 3 Nos
  • Mustard Seeds- 1 Tablespoon
  • Fenugreek Seeds -1/4 Tablespoon
  • Sambar Powder - 3 Tablespoon


  • 1Wash daal, take a cooker and add daal along with water, green chillies, salt. Cook for 4/5 whistles. Open the cooker and add chopped chembin thalu, then cook for 1 whistle again. Keep it aside.
  • 2In a kadai heat oil, add mustard seeds, dry red chillies, onions, curry leaves, and garlic. Saute for few seconds. Now add sambar powder saute till the raw smell goes. Open the cooker and add tamarind juice and saute onion, mix well. Add enough salt and mix well.
  • Boil for 10 minutes or until the sambar is a bit thick. Then finally taste the sambar and adjust the thickness according to your preference. If you want more thickness, cook sambar for 2 to 3 minutes. So the tasty d easy chembin thalu sambar is ready to serve.
